Historical Sites of the Kharkiv Region
Staryi Merchyk Staryi Merchyk offers an amazing journey through the Shydlovsky estate (18th century). To this day, the palace itself, two wings, a service building, a granary, and even a landscape park have been remarkably well-preserved. You can also visit a small church on the estate grounds. Once a vast palace complex belonging to the Shydlovsky family, this estate is rightfully considered one of the oldest in Eastern Ukraine. Unfortunately, the opulent interior could not withstand the test of time. While it looks somewhat somber today, one can still imagine its former grandeur. This marvel is located quite close to Kharkiv—just 30 km away.
Count Koenig’s Estate The estate of Count Koenig is the crown jewel of the Kharkiv region. Skipping it is an unthinkable mistake for any tourist. The most beautiful palace and park complex in Ukraine is situated near the Merchyk River in the village of Sharivka. These lands are famous for their unique natural beauty. Construction began in the 1670s by the Olkhovsky family, but the estate flourished in the 19th century under the ownership of the German Count Leopold Koenig. He transformed the manor and named it "The White Swan." To this day, the estate is steeped in the touching love story between the German count and his Ukrainian wife. The park area is breathtaking; nestled among conifers, lindens, and giant oaks is the "Stone of Love," which, as tradition dictates, is surrounded by romantic legends.
Nataliivka Estate Located on the banks of the same Merchyk River, the Nataliivka estate is tucked away in a beautiful pine forest near the village of Volodymyrivka. Construction was initiated by the sugar magnate and millionaire Ivan Kharytonenko, who named the estate after his youngest daughter. The manor was originally a two-story house built in the style of English cottages. While the interior was incredibly rich and beautiful, the main palace was unfortunately destroyed during World War II. Only the Church of the Saviour's Transfiguration, the magnificent gatehouse, several wings, and a water tower have survived. Today, the estate houses a sanatorium, and the surrounding park is a protected monument of landscape art. It is located 80 km from Kharkiv.
"Marshal Konev Height" Memorial Complex Located 14 km from Kharkiv, this complex is named after Marshal Konev, who occupied Height 197.3 during the liberation of the city. His tactical decisions allowed the German forces to be drawn out of the city into the field, sparing the local population and infrastructure. The complex includes an outdoor exhibition of military equipment, a stela, the Chapel of John the Warrior, and a modern museum.
Garden and Park Areas
Krasnokutsk Dendropark A unique site in Ukraine located on the outskirts of Krasnokutsk. It offers everything for nature lovers: exotic plants, crystal-clear ponds, an ancient monastery, and even an "Island of Lovers." Founded over 200 years ago by the biologist Ivan Karazin, this park was the gateway for horse chestnuts, Canadian maples, and sea buckthorn to enter Ukraine. Some of the oaks on the territory are over 300 years old! The terraces and alleys designed by Karazin himself remain a sight to behold.
The "Singing" Terraces Located in the village of Horodnie, these are brick garden terraces built in the 19th century by Pavlo Kharytonenko. Originally designed to create a microclimate for exotic fruit trees that struggled in the local soil, the terraces revealed an accidental acoustic marvel. In this specific spot, you can hear a whisper from over 50 meters away. It is a wonder that must be seen and heard to be believed.
Museums of the Kharkiv Region
Parkhomivka This small village hides a world-class historical and art museum. Founded by a local school teacher, Afanasiy Lunyov, the museum’s collection was largely built through the efforts of his students and their parents. Despite its remote location, the museum houses original masterpieces by Shishkin, Levitan, Aivazovsky, and even works by Picasso and Malevich. It contains approximately 3,000 unique exhibits.
Skovorodynivka A museum dedicated to the life of the famous Ukrainian philosopher and poet, Hryhoriy Skovoroda. Located in the Zolochiv district, about 50 km from Kharkiv, it features unique editions of his works, personal belongings, and his original burial site. The surrounding park, where the philosopher loved to meditate, adds to the serene atmosphere.
Sokolovo Museum of Combat Brotherhood Opened in 1968, this museum honors the friendship of nations and the great battle of 1943. It displays personal items of Soviet and Czechoslovak soldiers, medals, uniforms, and military equipment. Visitors can also watch a documentary film about the Battle of Sokolovo.
